There was an amusing little exchange my daughter and I had the other day. I shared it with my Facebook friends, and since I'm still laughing about it, I thought I'd share it with you too.
My eight year old was sitting next to me, engrossed in a chapter book, while I, of course, was punching away at the computer. She said to me, "it would be pretty bad for someone to stay in bed all day, everyday, and never go anywhere, huh?" To which I responded, "Yea, it sounds like someone who is depressed."
Daughter: "What does depressed mean?"
(FINALLY, an easy question that your psychologist mama can answer! Woo-hoo!)
Me: "It's when someone is really sad for a long time, and they don't think they can solve their problems. They don't feel like interacting with their friends..."
Daughter: "Does it mean a loss of interest?"
Me (stifling laughter): "Where'd you hear that, `a loss of interest'?!"
Daughter: "That's what they say on the commercial for Cymbalta."
Cymbalta? Seriously? And this is from the kid that doesn't get to watch much TV outside of Fetch, Reading Rainbow, and America's Funniest Home Videos.
The Moral of the Story: Even when you think they could care less, and aren't paying attention to "adult stuff," they are ALWAYS listening. ALWAYS!
My husband's response when I told him: "at least she wasn't repeating the commercial for those little blue pills" (i.e. Viagra). Yea, imagine explaining that one. Somehow, I won't be surprised if that's next.
I'm sure you can relate - kids hearing and repeating things you wish they wouldn't. In public. Like mentioning that your best girlfriend has a moustache.

Worst case scenario...she could have quoted (and asked you about) the "personal touch massager" commercial (I think it's Trojan, maybe?)!!

Yeah... I keep reminding my husband that we're raising little pitchers with big ears. And oooohhhhh the things they remember!

That is so classic... great story to hang on to! Also a good reminder that their little antennas are always out - listening to everything and taking it all in!
I am new from SITS and I think your blog is great!
