See that photo above? You'd never guess the event. Beautiful sand, surf, sunset, "s"elebrities (sorry, had an "s" thing going and couldn't stop). Give up? It was a Tupperware party in Malibu, hosted by Brooke Shields. Yes, mamas, that's how we do all the Tupperware parties in California - with cabanas, and bartenders, and young men playing guitar.
I'm also all about learning from my experiences. So, here are just a few things I learned from this one...
1) I'm a big girl now, who can go to functions all by herself, mix and mingle, smile, and feel OK in my skin. This wasn't always the case. I have a big mouth now, but I used to be painfully shy. Sure, it's more fun to go to functions with friends. Makes a visit to the ladies' bathroom more entertaining too. But, I was still OK going alone and meeting new people. I hope I can somehow teach my daughters to be even more self-confident, to "command a room" and yes, even go to the movies by themselves - uhh, something I'm still working on.
2) It's really uplifting to our drained mama spirit, to have a reason to get a mani/pedi, apply make-up, get our hair done, and borrow some clothes (even when those clothes belong to my own mother, who is way sexier and more fashionable than I'll ever be). Whether it's date night with our husband, hanging out with our girls, or just going to the mall to stroll the baby around in some free air conditioning, sprucing it up a bit can do a lot for ones energy level and attitude. When my daughter was younger, I used to dress up just to go to playgroup. When you're looking frumpy outside, you'll often feel frumpy inside.
3) Don't eat beans for lunch the day of a special event. I'm relieved to say there were no "incidents," but seriously, it wasn't worth the risk. Unfortunately, I thought of this after I had already finished my meal. And while I'm on the subject of food - if you go to an event hungry (hey, I'm out of practice, and was rushing to nurse the baby, get ready, give instructions to the sitter, etc), stand inconspicuously near the kitchen where the servers are going to first appear with the trays of food. If you're standing in the middle of the crowd, down on the beach, the freakin' tray is empty by the time it reaches you.
4) Tupperware has come a long way. These are not your mama's containers. And that swag bag was pridddy nice. Remember what I said would happen if I were famous? THIS is what I'm talking about.
5) The waves crashing, the sun setting, the smell of the ocean, the open bar...all reminded me that I REALLY need a vacation. Desperately.

That looked like one swanky event!
I didn't know that Tupperware could be that posh...
I love the way you write - very funny and insightful. Thanks for sharing! I found you through SITS and hope that you'll visit me too...
Greetings from Spain (where I am right now)

WOW! Looks like a great time! And you look great in that picture! How fun!
* @Loukia: Thank you, darlin. Obviously, it worked to make that photo really small. Nina

Woah! Who would have thought Tupperware parties could be so classy! I love your pointers. I'm still working on #1...

Sounds like fun, and you look BEAUTIFUL!! I'm still working on that whole "doing things by myself" thing (#1). I really don't like to do that. However, I go to the movies by myself all the time! It took some getting used to. I still look at the empty seat next to me when someone on the screen says something particularly clever, then I realize no one is sitting there and yet I still enjoy the cleverness and make a mental note to share it with a friend later. :-) As far as #2, I'm a single mom and I'm always on the look out so I try to make myself presentable MOST times when I leave the house. My outside appearance definitely makes a difference with how I feel on the inside.:-)

Wow, now that kind of tupperware party looks like fun! I agree with your points, especially number 2...I'm newly a SAHM and it's been exactly 7 months since I've managed a pedi and I really miss it.
* @Shannon - OK, mama, I'm challenging you to get a pedi before the end of the month! What the heck, go all out and have them put a flower on that big toe while you're at it. In between pedi's, you can do your own toes. But treat yourself to some good old fashioned professional scrubbin' every once in a while. Nina

OMG that looks absolutely FABULOUS!! I am a Pure Romance consultant...I might have to start having some parties like that!!
And I agree whole-heartedly with #2...it's the reason I became a consultant actually. Get out and mingle and have a great time with other ladies. Love it!

You're growing up, pal!
(Is that okay to say? I don't want one of 'those' calls again.) LOL! J/K Nina's my friend and I joke with her a lot....enough disclaimers?
Uh oh, I feel a reprimand coming. I'll turn my phone on now!
(I couldn't resist!) And I know to anybody reading this makes NO SENSE!
The event looks lovely. Are you a Tupperware distributor now? Because really, I'm interested in some new containers. My mother still has tupperware pieces from my childhood. (Tupperware distributors...don't contact me.) But I'd buy some from you, Nina.
Embarrassed enough yet?
Ree :)
* @Ree: You know, I've never had to block someone from commenting...until now.

Lucky! So, jealous! i love Brooke Shields. Was probably one of the only people (along with BFF) who was OBSESSED with Lipstick Jungle. Glad you made it to my SITS party. They are awesome, right?!

What a cool party... I haven't seen Tupperware in awhile, but I know it's really changed a lot. What a fun event -- and yay to you for being comfortable doing it by yourself!

Wow! I saw this even on entertainment tonight. Didn't see you in the crowd but I am sure there was some footage of you there! Exciting!
* @Sara: I saw that reporter, Mark, from ET at the event, but just thought he was a guest. Silly me. See, I need to get out more. Oh, and I can't believe they missed getting me on tv. Don't they know mommy blogging is the "it" thing?! I would've given an interview. Their loss. Now I'll just have to save myself for Oprah.

That was waaaay coool and I'm only a little green with envy. I'm a big fan of Brooke Shields and I think I would have just about died to have my picture taken with her. You're quite the popular mama now and it couldn't happen to a nicer person. Congrats.
