If you've been reading my blog for awhile (and I'm sure you have), then you know that my parental weakness is clothes shopping for my little girls. I'm always on the hunt for clothing that is unique, creative, colorful - something different from the other tots in Gymboree class. And my all-time favorite place to shop is...no, not Target (although I go there for everything else)...the Internet. Well, I learned something new during one of my recent Internet searches: that kids' clothes can be cute, soft, organic and even educational. At least the adorable tees and onesies from Learning Tees! By the way, the educational part helps me justify the purchase.
Learning Tees is an organic line of tees and onesies that are not only good for the planet, but good for your kids. Each tee is made of 100% organic cotton. On the front of the tee is a cute design of a character, and on the back the word. Learning Tees come packaged in a box with the corresponding letter (100% recyclable), that makes Learning Tees fun to receive and especially fun to give. Hang on, the learning doesn’t stop there. Each tee comes with a "fact tag" with fun facts about each character, and a link to the website where they can download a free coloring page with even more fun facts. It’s the most fun and functional tee you could ever buy!
I just love their philosophy behind the manufacturing of their tees, and their commitment to helping the planet. It actually gives me goosebumps. They go the extra step by ensuring that fair labor practices are used in the production of their garments. We searched hard for fair manufacturing. Our effort is to be part of a healthier planet all around. Learning Tees is made in India in a region known for it's eco-friendly businesses. The "birthplace" of our clothing is a happy, healthy, conscientious environment for the adults who make the clothing come together. No one under 18 years of age is employed by our manufacturer. What goes around comes around and we've made it so all good is coming your way.
With Learning Tees, it's not just about a cute, soft t-shirt for your kid, but that is certainly the end result!
Of course, I can't promise that wearing the tee will make your kid a whole lot smarter, but it's bound to make them more fashionable.
Wanna Buy It? Learning Tees has kids' t-shirts and onesies, with adorable characters from A to Z. Only $19.99 gets you a t-shirt and alphabet practice in one. See their great selection at www.learningtees.com

All of us moms have experienced that awful scare - our baby sleeps longer than normal, and instead of fully enjoying the peace and quiet, we're tip-toeing to their crib to make sure they're still breathing. Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS) is that catastrophic killer that pounces without warning, and makes us wait eagerly for the one year mark, when the risk of it occurring is significantly reduced.
My own fear of SIDS has recently increased, now that Munchkin is six months old, and rolling onto her belly the minute her body touches her crib. Thankfully, I've been a bit reassured by two medical studies I read recently. One study reports that using a fan can reduce SIDS risk by up to 72%. The other study indicates that breastfeeding may decrease SIDS risk by 50%.
I have the breastfeeding part covered. Needless to say, a fan is now a permanent fixture in Munchkin's nursery.
Are you past the stage of cribs and nighttime nursing? Stop gloating long enough to forward this important info to a mommy with a new baby. If you're like me, it's probably not the first time you've given them unsolicited, but useful, advice.
USING A FAN DURING SLEEP MAY REDUCT INFANTS' SIDS RISK,
KAISER PERMANENTE STUDY SHOWS
Infants who slept in a bedroom with a fan ventilating the air had a 72 percent lower risk of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome compared to infants who slept in a bedroom without a fan, according to a new study by the Kaiser Permanente Division of Research. The study appears in the October issue of the Archives of Pediatric & Adolescent Medicine.
It's the first study to examine an association between better air ventilation in infants' bedrooms and reduced SIDS risk. SIDS is the leading cause of death among infants aged 1 to 12 months, and the third leading cause of overall infant mortality in the United States.
The finding is consistent with previous research that showed factors influencing a baby's sleep environment may change SIDS risk. Among those factors are sleeping on the stomach and soft bedding, both of which may limit air ventilation around an infant's breathing pathway and thus increase the chance of re-breathing exhaled carbon dioxide, said the researchers.
Researchers explained that fan use is no substitute for practices known to reduce the risk for sudden infant death syndrome, which include: always placing infants to sleep on their backs, putting infants to sleep on firm mattresses and avoiding soft bedding materials like comforters and quilts, providing a separate sleep environment, preventing infants from overheating, and not smoking around infants. The study was funded by the National Institutes of Health.

BREAST-FEEDING MAY REDUCE RISK FOR SIDS by HALF THROUGHOUT INFANCY
Breast-feeding reduces the risk for sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS) by approximately 50% at all ages throughout infancy, according to the results of a case-control study reported in the March issue of Pediatrics...
...Exclusive breast-feeding at age 1 month was associated with half the risk for SIDS. Although partial breast-feeding at age 1 month was also associated with lower risk for SIDS, this risk was not significant after adjustment...
"This study shows that breastfeeding reduced the risk of sudden infant death syndrome by ~50% at all ages throughout infancy," the study authors write. "We recommend including the advice to breastfeed through 6 months of age in sudden infant death syndrome risk-reduction messages..."
"In our study, 73% of the infants died before 6 months of age," the study authors conclude. "The implication of our findings is that breastfeeding should be continued until the infant is 6 months of age and the risk of SIDS is low. Because breastfeeding rates are low in the socially deprived sections of our population, there should be special programs to encourage mothers of low socioeconomic status to breastfeed their infants not only for the established benefits of breastfeeding for the mother and infant but also to reduce the risk of SIDS in their infants."
Yes, boys and girls, it's time for another animated, action-packed, slime-filled movie, that hopes to have you laughing and screaming, while your parents are hoping that those adult-type jokes really do go over your head. The latest highly-anticipated PG installment: Monsters vs Aliens, opening Friday, March 27th. I'm sure it's no accident that the movie premiers the same day that most kids start their Spring Break. There are no accidents in movie-making, kiddo! As I often do, I checked my favorite kids movie review site, Kids-in-Mind, for a play by play synopsis of Monsters vs Aliens. Mommy likes to be prepared: popcorn, plain m&m's, soda, AND awareness if any cartoon butts are going to suddenly appear on the big screen. I'm actually looking forward to this one. Probably doesn't provide the great social commentary that Wall-E did, but not as likely to inspire little one's nightmares like Coraline. Did I mention it's 3-D? Gotta keep this Wii generation stimulated.
In this animated feature, on her wedding day a woman is struck by a meteor containing a compound that causes her to grow to enormous proportions. The government speeds her to a top secret facility where she and other "monsters" will be held forever. These plans are quickly thwarted when an alien arrives on Earth in search of the compound and will stop at nothing to get it. With the voices of Reese Witherspoon, Hugh Laurie, Seth Rogen, Paul Rudd, Will Arnett, Rainn Wilson, Kiefer Sutherland and Stephen Colbert. Directed by Conrad Vernon and Rob Letterman. [1:34]
SEX/NUDITY 2 - A man makes photocopies of several items, and then sits on a scanner with his pants down (we see his bare hip and buttock side with a small tattoo on it). As a woman grows larger from exposure to an alien compound, her dress tears away revealing bare legs and shoulders. A woman wears form-fitting suits in most scenes throughout the movie. ► A nearly 50-foot tall woman kisses a normal sized man and we see his head being enveloped by her lips. A man and a woman park, the woman moves close to the man and tries to kiss him, and he pushes her away. ► Two monsters talk about whether a human is male or female and one points and says "boobies," then says that because the human has them that makes it a boy. While talking a man holds his hands in such a way that it is implied that he is making a reference to breasts. A gelatinous monster flirts with a Jell-o mold salad. A monster makes comments to a man as if they had been dating and are now breaking up.
VIOLENCE/GORE 3 - A huge metal vessel with one large "eye" stands in the middle of a desert, armed men approach it, one man climbs a long flight of stairs to try to communicate with it, it starts to move, the man runs and dives out of the way, and the armed men open fire on it. ► One monster is a part ape/part fish creature, one monster is a cockroach man and one monster is a gelatinous blue glob. An alien is a squid-like creature with four eyes and tentacles, which it uses as legs and hands, and it clones itself many times so there are hundreds of them. ► A monster shoots an alien and we hear a splat and see the alien lying motionless. Several monsters fight with many aliens and a few aliens are shot, and others are thrown. An enormous insect is struck by a blast from an alien ship, it falls to the ground, its eyes slowly close and it is implied that it is dead (another monster grieves by its side)...
See Kids-in-Mind for further movie details. Yes, folks, there is more violence and gore. What'd you expect from monsters and alien beings?
It's not Sunday, but I'm going to make a confession. Recycling plastic water bottles, and conserving water on the front lawn, is the extent of the eco-friendly practices in my home. I know there is so much more my family can be doing, that isn't expensive or inconvenient. Like those darn plastic baggies that my husband and I are using by the ton, when we make our daughter's school lunch. And not buying all those plastic water bottles in the first place, even if we do put most of them in the recycle bin.
I have recently been inspired to change my wicked ways by Kids Konserve. This innovative company recently sent me a Lunch Kit to review, and we absolutely love it. The reusable, waste-free Lunch Kit includes a good-sized recycled cotton sack, cloth napkin, stainless steel beverage bottle, and stainless steel food containers. It also includes a "food kozy," a nifty reusable wrap for sandwiches and such. Genius.
My 7 year old daughter is probably the most environmentally conscious member of our family, since she learns a lot about recycling in school. So, she was thrilled when I gave her the Lunch Kit to use for her school lunch. I should say, when I finally gave it to her to use - the Lunch Kit is so cute and handy, that I had a hard time remembering that it's targeted toward kids, and was a wee bit reluctant to give it up. I even used it myself at work this week. You know, just for the sake of a thorough review.
My daughter's report: The containers were easy to access, the beverage bottle kept her drink cool, and important for any fashionable second-grader, she felt oh-so-earth-chic using stainless steel.
Of course, I showed off the Lunch Kit to my husband. He said he'd want the cloth bag to be bigger. I told him to eat less. My husband also said that he wanted to keep the cool-looking beverage bottle. I told him to create his own blog and do his own Product Reviews.
Our Kids Konserve Lunch Kit is a feel-good product, that looks good too. And I deserve to feel good - about my choices, about my impact on the environment, and about my lunch. I'm thinkin' green is my new favorite color.
Kids Konserve was started by two mompreneurs (gotta love that), with a goal of reducing the amount of trash coming home from their preschoolers' lunch. The amount of trash that school lunches contributes to garbage landfills and pollutants is mind-blowing. Quick quiz, mom: Where do all those baggies, water bottles, juice boxes, milk carton, paper napkins, foil and food wrappers go?
* The average child generates 67 pounds of lunchtime trash per year.
* 38 billion plastic water bottles end up in landfills each year - taking 700 years before they start to decompose.
Toss out the baggies, fold up the foil, Kids Konserve empowers children and parents to do their part in saving the environment. Kids Konserve challenges children and families to cut down on the waste created by packing lunches, while teaching about the importance of reuse.
This month, Kids Konserve launched their new recycled Party Pak. It's a great solution to waste-free parties and picnics, with party plates and utensils made from 100% recycled yogurt containers. So clever.
What's In Your Thermos? Their website offers some great suggestions on packing new things in your kid's lunch, using their eco-friendly thermos. Tortellini and pesto sauce, sloppy joe's, risotta with chicken...or make it easy on yourself and pack last night's yummy leftovers. They even give recipes for some of these fun lunch meals!
Also on the website - the Kids Korner, with great articles for kids, and how they can help save the environment by pledging to not buy plastic water bottles. The Kids Kwiz is a short test about the environment and going green. And coming soon, Kontests for kids!
Yes, mama, the grass is always greener on the other side. The secret is that it's greener because the other side is earth-friendly!
To Buy It: Go to the Kids Konserve website and check out their fab Lunch Kit, along with their other eco-cool products. They are now offering 10% off to Playground for Parents readers! Simply enter the word "playground" at checkout. Coupon code good through April 30th.
Thanks to Christy with Kids Konserve, for providing the product for this Review.
"Don't worry. My kid isn't sick. It's just his allergies." Really? Even with that green mucous clumping under his nose? How many times have you heard that comment from a mom desperate to get her sick kid back to school? Or (gasp!) how many times have you said it yourself? We know your kid is sick. You know your kid is sick. And he may still be contagious, BUT you have to return to work/run your errands/get out of the house before you go crazy from cabin fever.
My family made sure to have our flu shots this year because we have a new baby in the house. And, of course, I still managed to catch the flu. Fortunately, it didn't last very long. My oldest daughter only missed two days of school this cold season. And thankfully, Daddy and the baby have stayed insulated from the nasty cold germs. I'll give credit to my breastmilk and our semi-diligent handwashing. The breastmilk only applies to the baby, by the way, not the husband - in case you were wondering.
In an effort to help get us all through the remainder of the flu and cold season, I thought I'd share an article I just read from Parents.com. Think you know all there is to know about cold bugs, considering your kid has been sick 100 times since starting daycare? Don't dismiss this too quickly, mama. Were you aware that your kid is contagious for as long as she's sick, and it doesn't matter whether her snot is yellow or green? That if your kid is throwing up, she's contagious from the first symptom until she feels totally better? That if he has diarrhea, he's contagious until his poop is formed again? That viruses that cause fevers are contagious as long as the fever is above 100.4 degrees F?
Uh-oh, if enough parents learn this info, guess mom will have fewer excuses when little Johnny is wiping his nose with one hand, and digging in your kid's snack container with the other. Sounds like a Benadryl cover-up in the making.
Is My Kid Contagious? by Sara DuMond, M.D.
Wondering whether you need to quarantine your child when she has a cold, an ear infection, pinkeye, or another common childhood illness? Read on to find out what precautions you should take and how long these conditions are contagious, if at all.
Cold (Upper Respiratory Infection)
Each year between birth and age 5, a child gets an average of 8 to 12 colds. Telltale signs: a cough or a runny or stuffy nose.
Treatment Keep your child comfy until the cold runs its course. Give him nasal saline drops, run a cool-mist humidifier in his room, and suction his nostrils at least once a day. This will ease congestion; if your child is still uncomfortable, you can give him diphenhydramine (Benadryl), an over-the-counter antihistamine that may help him feel less clogged up. Because colds are caused by viruses, antibiotics are ineffective, and other cough and cold meds can cause sedation and shallow breathing and impede the clearing of nasal secretions.
Contagious factor When your child is feeling his worst (days three through five), he's most contagious. But symptoms can last for up to two weeks, and he's contagious as long as he's sick. Of course, you can't quarantine him for days. So wash your hands frequently after touching him, and keep him away from other kids during the cold's peak. And if the snot is green versus yellow? It doesn't matter. All colds are contagious regardless of mucus color.

Just give me one second…it’s difficult to type, while holding a brownie in one hand and a glass of milk in the other.Oh, who am I kidding! The outrageously delicious brownies from Fairytale Brownies barely even made it past the doorway. Hollow chocolate Easter bunnies were sooo last year. It's all about an Easter basket of brownies, baby.
Please pay attention, because what I’m about to tell you may change your life, or at least how you think of dessert: Fairytale Brownies creates some of the most decadent little brownie treasures ever to grace your lips. And trust me, mama, I know my brownies. I also know great presentation – I like things to be pretty and stylish and make a great first impression. The box that arrived from Fairytale Brownies surpassed this chocoholic’s standards.
I was thrilled when Fairytale Brownies offered to send me their Easter Medley box for a Product Review. The Easter Medley arrived in a richly-colored purple box lined with purple tissue-paper, and sealed with a silver label. No flimsy or cheap packaging here. The box contained 12 Fairytale flavors: original, caramel, chocolate chip, cream cheese, espresso nib, mint chocolate, peanut butter, pecan, raspberry swirl, toffee crunch, walnut and white chocolate. Read the list again if you need to. I know, it's pretty overwhelming at first. I really can’t tell you which brownie was my favorite. I think I may have to try them all over again, you know, as a professional. But, the true test of our overall impression was when I had my husband taste the Espresso Nib brownie. I’m not a coffee drinker, so I asked him to join the Review. Husband’s exact words, “They know what they’re doing.” Well, that's all I needed to hear to try the Espresso Nib for myself, and I whole-heartedly agreed. There is just the right amount of those flavor combinations, so that the taste of good chocolate is never lost.In other words, there is just the right amount of mint in the mint chocolate brownie, so it’s not overpowering. There is the perfect combination of caramel in the caramel brownie. The toffee crunch has just enough crunch to offer a sweet surprise, but you never forget you’re eating rich, quality chocolate.
Somehow, Fairytale Brownies manage to taste divine, and still be all-natural, certified kosher and free of trans fats, hydrogenated oils, preservatives and artificial colors. The brownies are baked from scratch with rich, dark Belgian chocolate, pure creamery butter and farm fresh eggs. Is your mouth watering yet? They are guaranteed fresh upon arrival, and they definitely came through on this guarantee. Don’t let the purple wrapping on each brownie fool you. There is nothing store-bought about these treats. They have specially designed boxes for every occasion, including Happy Birthday, Thinking of You, Congratulations, Thank You and Welcome New Baby. But, really, who needs a special occasion to send some brownie love?
The story behind the formation of Fairtytale Browniesis as sweet as their product. Co-founders Eileen Spitalny and David Kravetz met on the kindergarten playground, and remained friends through their school years. They decided at an early age that they wanted to be entrepreneurs and disseminate brownie goodness across the world. Their company was founded in 1992, where it began in a friend's catering kitchen using David's mom's 50-year-old secret family brownie recipe. Fast forward almost two decades later, and Eileen and David now oversee a gourmet brownie business that bakes over 2.5 million brownies annually! Fairytale Brownies is the nation’s largest gourmet mail-order brownie company.
Because David and Eileen have such fond memories of their early childhood play, Fairytale Brownies supports KaBOOM!, a national non-profit organization that empowers communities to build playgrounds. Purchase any Thank You, Happy Birthday, Congratulations, Thinking of You, Patriotic or their adorable Welcome Baby assortment, and a part of the proceeds is donated to KaBOOM! so they can help give the gift of play to children across the country. Ironically, my mommy support group just helped build a KaBoom! sponsored playground in our community last weekend!Definitely an amazing charitable organization.
Thank you to David’s mom for sharing that secret. Thank you to David and Eileen for knowing a good thing, and staying friends. And thank you to Fairytale Brownies. You’ve certainly made the world a sweeter place, by the millions!
Brownies like mom used to make.Only much, much better.
Don't just take my word for how great these brownies taste. Fairytale Brownies has been featured on the NBC Today Show, The Rachael Ray Show, Food Finds, Game Show Network and others! Check out their interviews and guest appearances. Just last month, they appeared on QVC:
Three things I learned from this Product Review:
1.It’s hard to hide a box of brownies from your greedy family.
2.I’m open to new tastes, as long as it is combined with chocolate.
3.A gift box of brownies can really turn your day around.

Have you noticed a birthday theme with my posts recently? Guess there was an unconscious reason for that, because...Today is my birthday! Woo-hoo! And I'm celebrating with a gift for one of YOU! It's the least I could do when you're going to shower me with well-wishes, flowers, and spa certificates. Ha! On to the Product Review and Giveaway...
Motherhood is, without exception, the single most exhilarating, mind-blowing, challenging, hysterically funny, infinitely rewarding experience of my life. The memories of my pre-baby days are becoming more and more faint (well, except for the couple of times in college when... Wouldn't you like to know). I can't imagine, and don't want to imagine, life without my little girls. They bring unparalleled purpose to my life. It is for that reason that I love to symbolically celebrate motherhood. Personalized charms, pendants, frames...I thought I had it all. Until I saw the stone.
Yes, a stone. A lovely, handcrafted, engraved stone fashioned into a pendant by San Jose Engraving. The engraved stone that caught my eye when I recently visited their Etsy shop was the Mom and Baby Pendant with Cord.
The husband and wife team of Sjengraving, Joanne and Tony Cheng, custom engrave natural rocks, glass and wood, in their home-based workshop. I just have the cutest vision of these two working side-by-side on their delicate works of art. Ahhhh! I contacted Sjengraving, and they generously offered to send me the Mom and Baby Pendant for a Product Review, AND provide another pendant for a Giveaway to one of my readers!
When I received the Mom and Baby Pendant, even the small tan gift box tied with raffia, represented a gift that was natural, earthy, symbolic, and actually soothing. The footprints of mom and baby are deeply carved on a smooth gray beach pebble from California. The pendant has a sterling silver plated bail, with an 18" long black velvet cord. It's a special, unique piece, symbolic of my most treasured relationship. The pendant is casual enough for me to wear anytime, and the solid neutral color allows me to wear it with anything.
I love Sjengraving's gift suggestions for their custom stones: baby’s first word, name of a very special place, a very special date in life, a magical word that inspires or connects with someone’s life, an important milestone, summarize someone’s life in 5 or 6 words, personalized expression for a special occasion, custom logos and emblems, group gifts for business, fundraising or reunions. Also great for highlighting your garden, porch, or desktop, and as an original souvenir for a wedding or special event.
For yourself, or as a gift for Granny, Auntie, or Godmom for Mother's Day. Wow - can you imagine having your Mother's Day gift purchased already? You're SO organized.
Visit the San Jose Engraving Etsy store. Leave a Comment telling me your favorite item from the store, other than the Mom and Baby Pendant offered in the Giveaway. Comments must be received by 11:59pm (PST) on April 6th. One winner will be selected by Random.org. Winner will be notified via email, and will be announced here. Be sure to leave your email address so that I can contact you (and make sure it doesn't go to spam) - I'd hate for you to miss your prize. I probably get asked at least once per week for advice on kids' birthday parties - from where to have it, to what to do. Obvioulsy, when I claimed that I'm your "go-to-gal," you took me seriously and decided to put my claim to the test. Well, fine, bring it on! I'm up for the challenge; I'll find the answers (and when I can't find the answer, I'll just make it up).
Birthday parties are an easy one for me. Remember, I'm the crazy chick that loves planning extravagant soirees for a toddler, months in advance. Oh, you were looking for something a bit more toned down? Then I'll have to call in extra resources for this one: Keisha of Chic Party Plans has some great tips for less-stress party planning, and offered to share them with my readers!
And for anyone debating if they should host a birthday party for their one year old, because afterall "a baby won't know what's going on, and the party is just for the adults anyway" - the answer is YES! Of course, it's just for the adults. So what?! Don't you and daddy and the grandparents of that adorable hunk of baby love deserve to be celebrated and congratulated?! Don't you want an opportunity to show off baby's wobbly steps, bye-bye wave, and new teeth, to a crowd who cares?! And most of all, don't you want a reason to eat cake?! Yes, yes, and yes!
Some super quick tips from me (guess I couldn't resist afterall): visit www.birthdaypartyideas.com for a whirlwind of party ideas on every theme imaginable, submitted mostly by other parents. I've used the site several times, and found some fantastic tips. Need a venue? Check www.GoCityKids.com. I posted details about this site previously. I'm sure you were paying attention then, so I'll move on. Designate someone ELSE to take photos of the party, because you'll be too busy answering strange requests from your guests (do you have any Sponge Bob bandaids? Can I get a q-tip?). Ask that someone responsible make you a plate of food to save for later - don't even think you'll get to sit down and eat during the two hours. And you'll be as hungry as you are tired once the party is over. Finally (and this advice is REALLY profound, so hold on tight), be in the moment. Soak it in. Notice your child's smile. Be present for at least a little while, because the parties, like their lives, go by so quickly.
Now, on to that backup help I mentioned. Thanks Keisha!

Three years ago, I was faced with the daunting task of planning my son's first birthday. There were so many things to consider - who to invite, what to serve, how to fill the time… oh and what to wear!I soon found myself dazed and confused, filled with excitement and ideas, but no plan of action.I shared my dilemma with a friend, and she gave me some of the best words of advice I’ve heard since becoming a parent, “keep it simple, he's one.”This is advice I’ve adhered to for the past three years, advice I’ve shared with other parents and it works every time. When planning a birthday party for a young child KISS is the golden rule - Keep It Simple and Short!
Keep it Small – Young children can get overwhelmed by large crowds, so keep the guest list small. Since children will be accompanied by parents who will likely stay the duration of the party, consider inviting no more than 8-12 children. This number is also helpful when shopping for favors and party décor as these items are usually sold by the dozen.
Keep it Short – Avoid naptime and peak meltdown periods at the end of the day.Early morning or late afternoons are literally “good times” for those in the pre-school set.For the past three years, I’ve scheduled my son’s party to begin immediately after his nap (usually around 2 or 3PM), and his spirits and those of his little guests are generally bright and cheery. On the invitation, I indicate that the party will run for two hours, keeping in mind that people will linger and things will usually run over. What I’ve noticed is that listing a 2-hour party period motivates people to arrive on time.
Keep it Simple – Given two hours to celebrate, there are a few easy things you can plan to make the party run smoothly and to ensure that everyone’s enjoyment.Remember to be flexible.Young kids appreciate choice; therefore, there is no need to over schedule and fill every minute of the party with activities. An easy activity that kids can do as they arrive (or whenever they choose) creates an opportunity to ease tots’ transition.Examples of transition activities:
–A mural for an art-themed party – place tempera paint (mixed with a little detergent to ease paint removal from clothing), brushes and smocks or large tee-shirts on a table next to a long piece of butcher paper taped to a wall or fence (works best outdoors)
–Decorating cowboy boy hats or bandanas for a farm-themed party – use non-toxic fabric paint or foam stickers
–A box of dress up clothes/props for a princess or tea party theme
Use one organized activity as a means to assemble all of the kids in one place before serving the cake.Use the cake-cutting to signal the party’s conclusion.Save gift-opening for the later; there is no need to make everyone (especially young children who are undoubtedly growing tired) sit through an event that is rewarding only to the receiver of the gifts.
Food and Favors – As with activities, be flexible with the food, allowing people to eat whenever they like rather than having an established meal time.A good trick is to pre-pack kid-friendly food (e.g. mini grilled cheese, pigs in a blanket, chicken nuggets, and individual packages of graham cracker snacks or Goldfish, fruit and juice boxes) in individual lunch bags that can easily be accessed by parents whenever kids are hungry.
When it comes to favors, do your fellow parents a favor and skip all of the sweet treats.Opt instead for a memorable keepsake that the party guests will appreciate long after the last party balloon has deflated.A few suggestions include:
–A fun photo opp with the birthday child (in dress up clothes or in front of a themed backdrop) placed in a custom-imprinted party frame
–A book, small plush toy and stickers all tied to the theme of the party
–Art supplies like crayons, paper and water colors
Following the tips above will ensure your kid’s bash is a big hit among the younger crowd. And oh, regarding what to wear… something you can sit in, kneel in, bend in, run in, skip in, and most importantly, have fun in!

So, I sent this message to my family and friends, in honor of the Munchkin turning six months old. They thought the concept of a "Half Birthday" was so nifty, that I'm sharing it with you. Perhaps we'll start a worldwide trend of celebrating "Half Birthdays." Because, you know, we really need another random holiday. And yes, she's only six months old, but she dictated this entire message. I just had to type it. Her fingers are still too short to reach all the keys, and she sorta falls over on the keyboard...
Happy "Half" Birthday to me!!
Today I turned 6 months old! And I have the moves to prove it! I'm sitting up all by myself - I can probably last a whole 10 minutes before I start leeeeaning, and fall on my face like a drunken sailor. I roll over and sleep on my stomach, even though mommy tries to put me down on my back. She still hasn't figured out who's really in charge around here. She thinks it's THE cutest thing when I wake up and lift my head with sleepy eyes, and smile at her. She's so easy. I have two bottom teeth, and my two top teeth have made an appearance. I do a great job not being cranky about the teeth cutting through my gums. But the drool is pretty ridiculous. Not very lady-like.
I love to suck on my toes. Don't judge - you would too if you could still reach your feet. I'm still sleeping through the night. I especially like it when it rains, and lately I've been waking up around 8am - must be the winter skies. Mommy really appreciates it when I do this, although she's in a bit of discomfort. What's engorgement? I grab everything and immediately attempt to put it in my mouth. Hey, if you're all up in my face, you can't complain when I dig my fingernails into your eye socket. Just doing what babies are supposed to do. I simply give you one of my big beautiful smiles, and all is forgiven for pulling your hair out. Apparently, my mom isn't the only one that's easy.
My favorite person in the world is my big sister. She reads to me, and sings & dances for me, which always sends me into hysterics. Mommy and Daddy are neat, but that sister is a one-woman show. Hope she's getting paid. Sister had me wear a "party dress," AND shoes (which she kept reminding me used to be hers). I thought a simple onesie was enough, since it was just family at this so-called party. But, when your big sister is a fashionista, you must always look your best.
So, mommy chose to celebrate this 6 month milestone. We had half of a cake, and they sang "Happy 1/2 Birthday." Yep, it's pretty obvious even to me, that mommy will use any excuse to eat cake, and create a photo opportunity.
Daddy made a red velvet cake from scratch. It was delicious. Not that I got to eat any - I haven't even started solids yet. But, I got plenty in the breastmilk, considering that mommy ate the whole other half of the cake.
I got to have my 6 month vaccinations. Whose bright idea was that? I don't think that's how you celebrate a special occasion.
You will likely spend the night before Easter filling a rainbow-colored basket with green plastic straw and yellow marshmallow peeps for your kid. Ahh,those were the days - waking up to a bounty of chocolate and treats, and enjoying them all week long. Well, I'm here to tell you -mom, dads, and fellow chocoholics, that those days don't have to be over! What would you say to your very own grown-up Easter basket, overflowing with award-winning gourmet treats? I thought so. I may no longer believe in the Easter Bunny (we all know that only Santa Claus is real), but I do believe in chocolate treats and decadent sweets at any age, for any occasion. Fortunately for you and me, there's Gourmet Gift Baskets.com.
I'm generally good at keeping secrets and planning surprises. But, it was really tough to keep this one underwraps for the past week. I have been bursting at the seams to fill you in on the Product Review and Giveaway from Gourmet Gift Baskets.com. And now I can finally LET IT OUT!
My new friend, Mike (he sells chocolate; that automatically makes him my friend) at Gourmet Gift Baskets.com, offered to send me a gift basket of my choice to review! I'll be honest with you, selecting just one gift basket from their incredible selection was about as challenging as choosing a school for my kid. Tea and Cookies,Italian Gift Baskets, Grilling & BBQ Baskets,
French/Paris Gift Baskets are just a few of those available in their amazing line-up. They sell gift baskets for all the major holidays, including Easter and Mother's Day. They have special Occasions and Sentiment baskets, for Babyand Birthday (did I mention that my birthday is on the 23rd? Woo-hoo!). And even Specialty Theme baskets that match a person's hobbies, such as Golf and Gardening. Every gift basket sounded just as good as the next. Are you understanding my agonizing dilemma, ladies?! Yes, I'm sure you're really sympathetic.
Ok, I won't keep you in suspense any longer. Finally, with great care (because I take my job as a Reviewer very seriously), I selected the Sweets Gift Basket. And then I waited, which as you can imagine, is the hardest thing for a chocoholic to do.
My Sweets Basket arrived even earlier than expected. Thank you chocolate Gods, and thank you Gourmet Gift Baskets.com. It was beautifully packaged, with all of the award-winning gourmet treats set in a high-quality reusable woven basket, and tied with colorful ribbons. I didn't want to cut the wrapping. Ok, you know me better than that. This gift basket could've been wrapped in gold, and I still would've ripped it open like someone on Survivor Island. Once I did break the seal, it truly did not disappoint.
All of the Sweets were of superior quality and delicious. The Chocolate Orange Raspberry Filled Cookies were moist and scrumptious. The Signature Milk Chocolate Bar melted in my mouth. The English Toffee was divine. The Key Lime White Chocolate Cookies were the perfect combination of flavors. The Chocolate Chip Cookies were a great little treat. Word of caution about the Golden Caramel Nuggets: the taste is so light, yet wonderfully sweet, that you're likely to eat most of the bag before you realize it. We gave Grandma the Buttered Peanut Crunch - it was the least we could do when she babysat our kids that evening. Grandma reported that it was "really good," and we were surprised not to find her in a buttered crunch-induced coma when we returned home. Now that the goodies have been devoured, we have our woven basket to re-use and remind us of the greedy good times (I'm hoping it will remind my husband to order another one for my birthday. Did I mention it's on the 23rd?).
Just remember these profound words from yours truly: Marshmallow peeps are gross. Gourmet Gift Baskets.com is cool. And every adult still deserves an Easter basket.
Afantastic gift for your spouse, your child's teacher, pastor, nanny, babysitter, Grandma, hard-to-please mother-in-law...the negotiator who did your home loan modification.
